How to Convert a Foreign Driver's License in Zimbabwe

Estimated read time: 3 minutes

Quick Summary

  • Who is it for?: Zimbabwean residents returning from abroad with a valid foreign driver's license.
  • Where to go: Your nearest Vehicle Inspection Department (VID) depot.
  • Key Requirement: Your valid foreign driver's license and proof of residency/return.
  • Do I need a test?: No written or driving test is required for the conversion of a valid foreign license.
  • Outcome: You will be issued a full Zimbabwean driver's license (a "metal disc").

If you are a Zimbabwean returning home after living abroad, you can convert your valid foreign driver's license into a Zimbabwean license without having to go through the entire process of getting a new one. This is a straightforward process handled by the Vehicle Inspection Department (VID).

Step 1: Gather Your Documents

Before you visit the VID, you need to prepare a set of specific documents. Ensure you have both the originals and clear photocopies of everything.

  • Valid Foreign Driver's License: The original license must be valid and not expired.
  • Valid Zimbabwean Passport: To prove your citizenship and residency status.
  • National ID Card: Your original metal or plastic ID.
  • Proof of Residence: A recent utility bill (ZESA, water, telephone) in your name. If the bill is not in your name, the property owner must provide an affidavit confirming you reside at that address.
  • Passport-Sized Photos: You will usually need 2-3 photos, but it's wise to bring a few extra.

Step 2: Visit the Vehicle Inspection Department (VID)

All license conversions are processed in person at a VID depot. You cannot do this online.

  1. Go to Your Nearest VID Office: Major VID depots in cities like Harare and Bulawayo handle these conversions.
  2. Request the Conversion Form: At the inquiries desk, ask for the form for converting a foreign driver's license.
  3. Complete the Form: Fill out the form with your personal details and information from your foreign license.
  4. Submit Your Documents: Hand in the completed form along with your original documents and their photocopies for verification.
  5. Pay the Fee: There is a processing fee payable in USD cash. The clerk will advise you of the current amount.

Step 3: Biometrics and Issuance

Once your documents have been verified and your payment is processed, the final step is to have your biometrics taken.

  • Eye Test: You will be required to take a simple eye test on-site.
  • Photo & Signature: Your digital photograph and signature will be captured.
  • Issuance: After your biometrics are captured, you will be issued with your new Zimbabwean driver's license, often referred to as the "metal disc." In most cases, this is done on the same day.

Important Considerations

  • Expired Licenses: You cannot convert an expired foreign driver's license. It must be valid at the time of your application.
  • SADC Licenses: While you can legally drive in Zimbabwe with a valid license from a SADC country for a period, it is highly recommended to convert it to a local license if you are planning to reside in the country permanently.
  • Non-English Licenses: If your foreign license is not in English, you will need to get an official, certified translation of it to submit with your application.
