Quick Summary

  • What it is: A license for motorcycles of any engine size.
  • Minimum Age: 16 years old.

  • Key Test: A practical yard test at the VID, focusing on handling and maneuvers.
  • Safety Gear: Wearing a helmet is a legal requirement during lessons and the test.

A Class 3 license allows you to legally ride a motorcycle in Zimbabwe. The process involves a theory test to get your learner's permit, followed by a practical handling test.

Step 1: Get a Provisional Driver's License

This is the same initial step as getting a car license and allows you to start learning.

  1. Visit a TSCZ Office: Go to your nearest Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe office with your National ID.
  2. Pass the Theory Test: You must pass a written or oral test on the Highway Code.
  3. Issuance: Once you pass, you will be issued a Provisional Driver's License. This allows you to ride a motorcycle under the supervision of a qualified instructor.

Step 2: Motorcycle Riding Lessons

It is highly recommended to get lessons from a registered driving school that specializes in motorcycle training.

  • Safety First: Lessons will cover basic controls, balance, braking, and essential safety maneuvers.
  • Practice for the Test: Your instructor will train you on the specific maneuvers required for the VID test, such as the figure-eight and U-turns.

Step 3: The VID Yard Test

Unlike the car test, the motorcycle test is primarily a test of handling and control conducted within a designated yard at a VID depot.

  1. Booking the Test: Your driving school will help you book a test date.
  2. The Test Maneuvers: An examiner will ask you to perform a series of exercises, which typically include:
    • Riding slowly and maintaining balance.
    • Performing figure-eights within a marked area.
    • Making sharp turns and U-turns without putting your foot down.
    • Demonstrating proper braking.
  3. Issuance of License: If you successfully complete the maneuvers, the examiner will issue your Certificate of Competency. You can then get your license updated to include Class 3.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Lack of Balance Practice: The test is all about low-speed control. Many people fail because they haven't practiced enough to master the balance required for the figure-eight.
  • No Safety Gear: You will not be allowed to take the test without an approved helmet. Other protective gear like gloves and boots is also highly recommended.
  • Using a Personal Bike: It's often better to use the driving school's motorcycle for the test, as you will be familiar with it and it will be properly licensed and insured for training.
