How to License Your Vehicle (ZINARA)

In Zimbabwe, every registered vehicle is required by law to display a valid license disc on its windscreen. This is not the same as a driver's license; it is a tax for the vehicle itself, managed by the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA). This guide explains the simple process of renewing your vehicle license.

Part 1: What You Need to Bring

Before you go to pay for your new license disc, make sure you have the following two essential documents with you. You will not be able to complete the process without them.

1. Original Vehicle Registration Book: This is the official document (often a small, blue or green book) that proves you are the registered owner of the vehicle. Photocopies are not usually accepted.
2. Valid Vehicle Insurance: You must have a current, valid insurance policy for the vehicle. This can be Third Party or Fully Comprehensive. The licensing officer will need to see your proof of insurance (a disc or cover note).

Part 2: The Step-by-Step Licensing Process

The process of renewing your license is straightforward and can be done at a number of locations across the country.

Step 1: Choose Where to Pay

You have several options for payment, with the most common being in person.

• Zimpost (Post Office): This is the most common and accessible method. Most Zimpost branches in towns and cities across Zimbabwe are equipped to handle vehicle licensing.
• ZINARA Offices: You can pay directly at any ZINARA regional office.
• Online/Mobile Platforms: Some services offer online renewal options, though it's always best to check their current validity. These often require you to pay via mobile money and then collect the physical disc later.

Step 2: Present Your Documents and Pay

At the counter, you will need to:

1. Present your Vehicle Registration Book and proof of insurance.
2. State the licensing term you wish to pay for (usually 4, 6, or 12 months).
3. Pay the required fee. The amount depends on the size and type of your vehicle. Payment is typically accepted in USD or the ZWL equivalent at the official rate.
4. You will be issued with your new license disc immediately.

Step 3: Display Your New Disc

It is a legal requirement to display your new license disc clearly on the left-hand side of your vehicle's windscreen. Failure to do so can result in a fine if you are stopped at a police roadblock.
