This guide covers the process for applying for the new Zimbabwean e-passport from within South Africa. The process requires an online booking and an in-person visit to the consulate for biometrics.

Step 1: Book Your Appointment Online

You cannot walk into the consulate. An appointment is mandatory and must be booked online.

  1. Visit the official Zimbabwe Consulate Johannesburg website.
  2. Navigate to the "Appointments" section.
  3. Select "Passport Application" and choose a date and time. Available slots can be limited, so check regularly.
  4. You will receive a confirmation email. Print this out and bring it with you on the day.

Step 2: Gather Your Documents

You must bring the **original documents plus one clear photocopy** of each.

  • Original Long Birth Certificate and a copy.
  • Original National Identity Document (ID) and a copy. Metal or plastic IDs are accepted.
  • Your Expired or Current Passport and a copy of the bio-data page.
  • For lost passports, you need an original police report/affidavit.
  • Marriage Certificate / Divorce Order (for married/divorced female applicants) and a copy.
  • Two identical colour photographs (size 3.5 x 4.5cm, white background, no glasses).

Step 3: The Consulate Visit

On the day of your appointment, arrive on time with all your documents.

  1. Pay the Consulate Fee: You will first pay a non-refundable fee of R300 for the processing of the application form.
  2. Form Submission & Vetting: Your documents will be checked by a consulate official. If everything is in order, you will be given the application form to complete.
  3. Pay the Passport Fee: You will then be directed to pay the main passport fee. The ordinary e-passport is $120 USD, and the emergency e-passport is $220 USD. This must be paid in the ZAR equivalent on the day.
  4. Biometrics Capture: You will have your fingerprints and photograph taken.
  5. Confirmation: You will receive a receipt with a reference number. Keep this safe.

Step 4: Collection

The e-passport is printed in Zimbabwe and sent back to the consulate. The official turnaround time is 7-10 working days, but it's wise to check the consulate website for any updates on collection dates.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Photocopies: Forgetting to bring clear photocopies of all your original documents is the most common reason for being turned away.
  • Online Booking: Do not go to the consulate without a confirmed appointment printout. You will not be allowed in.
  • Payment: Confirm the accepted payment methods on the consulate website before you go. They are often very specific.
  • Old Birth Certificates: Very old, tattered, or laminated birth certificates may be rejected. It's best to have a newer, legible copy.
